Drug Abuse

Similarities of Drug Abuse and Alcohol Abuse

The similarities of drug and alcohol abuse which leads to addiction are that both are diseases of the brain. Drug and alcohol addiction share a common thread of progressive symptoms of craving, loss of control, physical and/or psychological dependence and drug tolerance.  Drug abuse treatment is recommended for anyone experiencing any or all of these symptoms of addiction.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment

Drug and alcohol abuse treatment will vary based upon the individual's particular needs and the severity of their condition. Effective treatment for drug and alcohol abuse will differ for each person depending upon varying factors including:

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Settings

Drug and alcohol abuse treatment can take place in one of two settings; in residential or outpatient drug and alcohol abuse treatment programs. There are of course vast differences between the two programs, each designed for different levels of drug and alcohol abuse.

For example, if a person had a strong support system, still had their job, a healthy place to live and was extremely motivated then an outpatient drug and alcohol abuse treatment program may prove appropriate.

If the individual is unmotivated, their consequences are escalating and they have poor support in their life, then they might benefit more from the structure and therapy a residential drug and alcohol abuse program has to offer.
