Drug Treatment

Drug treatment is the process by which an individual abusing or addicted to drugs or alcohol takes part in detoxification and therapy to stop using and stay clean and sober. During drug treatment there are two instances when medications may be used.  First, during the detoxification process, medications can be used to ease the withdrawal symptoms.  Detoxification is the first step in the drug treatment process toward recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism. Secondly, medication is sometimes used during drug treatment to help diminish and help restore the brain's normal functions that have been damaged from the addiction.  There are several effective drugs in use today to treat heroin and morphine addiction, which are used at Lakeview on an individual basis.  Development is under way for drug treatment medications for addiction to cocaine, marijuana and crystal meth.

The Drug Treatment Plan

After a detoxification process, in which a client will stop using drugs or alcohol, a drug treatment plan, is formed. This plan will include some type of behavioral therapy, counseling and medication to assist the client in drug treatment.  The drug treatment plan also will take into account any co-occurring medical and psychiatric disorders and treat them accordingly. When addiction is accompanied by a mental health disorder the patient is said to have a dual diagnosis.

The drug treatment plan must remain adjustable to accommodate the changing needs of the client, but a client must remain in treatment for an ample amount of time in order for the drug treatment to be successful.  According to the NIDA, those in drug treatment for more than 60 days have greater chance of success than those that stop drug treatment before they have reached a 60-day period.

Individualized Drug Treatment

There is a consensus in the medical community that no one single drug treatment plan fits all clients. A successful drug treatment program is customized to meet an individual's particular needs. This individualized drug treatment is the hallmark of Lakeview's nationally recognized center. At Lakeview Health Systems, our drug treatment programs help you achieve success.  We offer a continuum of care that extends beyond the daily drug treatment processes with treatment of medical conditions and mental health, family recovery, relapse prevention, and other follow-up options.
